Sunday, August 30th saw Canadian Formula BMW Rookie Driver Alex Ellis close off a season filled with ups and downs as he took his FB02 race car for its final laps around Mosport International Raceway in nearby Bowmanville, ON. The 4 day weekend ended in disappointment for the 17 year old driver as he missed his final opportunity at claiming the 2009 Formula BMW Rookie Championship, but the young driver says that he is looking positively forward into 2010.  “The way my entire year went was really highlighted at Mosport with a crash one session, and then 4th in the first race, and then a DQ in the 2nd race. It was a truly frustrating season but I came into this year with one thing in mind – to learn as much as possible, and I know that I've done that, so it's comforting knowing that where ever I plan to go next year, I can be successful”

Mosport saw Ellis Qualify 5th for Round 13 and 6th For Round 14, finishing 4th and DQ respectively. Going into race 2, Ellis was in a close position to claim the Rookie Championship, tied with Australian driver James Kovacic and only 6 points trailing of American Michael Lewis. The 3 Rookie contenders would start together on the grid as well. The race saw Ellis take Kovacic in turn one. He then caught Lewis but was unable to complete a pass on him and followed until a small mistake pushed the Canadian driver further down the field and into 9th place. They would finish this way, with Lewis winning the championship. However, following post race technical inspection, Ellis was disqualified due to his whole rear wing being shifted 1.5 degrees. It is undetermined how this happened, as it is not performance gaining, but rather performance harming.

Ellis ended off the season finishing 6th overall and 3rd in the Rookie Championship, and although this year didn't necessarily bring the results he had hoped for, it definitely brought the learning curve he expected, and more.

Looking into the 2010 season, there are many options that the young Canadian Alex Ellis is presented with, but it appears that budgetary concerns will be the deciding factor as to where you will see the Canadian next year.

News will follow in the near future regarding signings and decisions made regarding next year.
